Unity of Purpose and Mission

After many days of discussion, testimony from apostles and Gentiles, and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the early church found scriptural support for welcoming Gentiles into the Christian community. The church was strengthened and a major schism averted. Of course, this result required a level of trust from the church at Antioch when it sent representatives to Jerusalem to seek counsel with other apostles and elders. They trusted that together they would find the best solution to their conflict.

These stories in the book of Acts teach us that church unity is rooted in a mind-set of trust, confidence, and love for one another. The influence of the Holy Spirit brought humble acceptance of positions that appeared to contradict long-held interpretations of Scripture, producing a revoutionary solution and bringing greater unity in purpose and mission.
